Turning an average day into an unforgettable one, Young Mazda Utah surprised Mount Ogden Junior High School math instructor Robert Bennington — who won Ogden School District’s teacher of the year award — with an all-expenses paid, one-year lease on a new 2026 Mazda CX-5.

The event began with a staged fire drill, which brought Bennington and his 7th grade class to the baseball field. There, he was greeted by a drum line, an assembly of police cars and a fire truck, as well as representatives from Young Mazda, Ogden School District, the Ogden School Foundation, Goldenwest Credit Union and the Young Caring for Our Young Foundation. Following a speech from Young Mazda general manager Ryan Albert, the fire truck was driven away to reveal the vehicle hiding behind.
“It’s phenomenal,” said Bennington. “To see that the community is supporting teachers, it’s typically an under-appreciated position. I know a lot of people appreciate teachers, but it’s nice to get that recognition out there to everybody.”
In addition to the lease, Bennington received insurance offered by Goldenwest Insurance Services and a gas card.
“We’ve been hosting this giveaway for four years, and it continues to be one of our dealership’s favorite events,” said Albert. “I know many people, including myself, who can identify educators that made a massive difference in their life. The Young Automotive Group is an organization dedicated to supporting communities, and that means recognizing people who do some much for those around us.”

The fourth teacher to be surprised with a vehicle from Young Mazda, Bennington became the first to learn about his Teacher of the Year award as he was given his keys. Previous recipients have included Chris Davidson from Ogden High School, Kimberly Pickett from Lincoln Elementary School and Levi Andersen from Mound Fort Junior High School.
Adding to Young Mazda’s efforts, Young Kia has hosted a similar initiative with Davis School District since 2016. Each dealership engages with the Young Caring for Our Young Foundation to host the surprise — an organization that’s renowned as a staple supporter of several education foundations.
“As a nonprofit that’s dedicated to empowering children in need, we recognize the responsibility we have to champion our schools,” said Kellee Belnap, executive director of the Young Caring for Our Young Foundation. “Education is a vital resource for a developing mind, which is why we’re honored to celebrate teachers like Bennington who help their students achieve success. We’re grateful to work with exceptional partners and sponsors who share our vision, and help host events that mean so much to our communities.”
