I know most of you have probably seen this poem on “Habit” but I would like to add to it a little by giving you some thought starters on what habits you need to work on to be more successful. But first re-acquaint yourself with this poem and then read my thoughts below.
I am your constant companion,
I am your greatest helper or heaviest burden.
I will push you onward or drag you down to failure.
I am completely at your command.
Half the things you do might just as well turn over to me
and I will be able to do them quickly and correctly.
I am easily managed –
you must merely be firm with me.
Show me exactly how you want something done
and after a few lessons, I will do it automatically.
I am the servant of all great people;
and alas, of all failures as well.
Those who are great,
I have made great.
Those who are failures,
I have made failures.
I am not a machine,
though I work with all the precision of a machine
plus the intelligence of a human.
You may run me for a profit or run me for ruin –
it makes no difference to me.
Take me,
train me,
be firm with me,
And I will place the world at your feet.
Be easy with me,
and I will destroy you.
WHO AM I?
I AM HABIT.

Those who are failures,

I am not a machine,

it makes no difference to me.
Take me,

And I will place the world at your feet.

WHO AM I?
I AM HABIT.
Ok, thanks for taking the time to read the Poem. Now what habits do you need to work on?
Can I give you a few that I think are important, no matter what job you are currently working on or in the company.
Plan out your day. Start each day with a plan. Don’t just wing it. Have a plan, what you are going to do and what priorities you are going to tackle today and then write it down, cross them off and keep to the schedule.
Read something good and positive. Yes, start your day by enriching your mind. Kick start the day and your mind by making it a priority to read something.
Do something kind. Yep, you know what I mean. It doesn’t have to be something big or planned out but do something kind for your spouse, your child, your neighbor, your co-worker, or a stranger. Try it…..it comes back to you.
Study and rehearse some portion of your job to be better. If in sales, work on your scripts. If a technician… do a little training, If in clerical….read a little up on accounting. If a receptionist or BDC work on the right scripts to be more helpful to people and their needs. If a manager…..walk around your department, inspect things, check up on your staff and see that they have all things they need to be successful. You know what I mean…..make it a motto to work on getting better at your job daily. Make it a habit.
Take care of your body. Yes that means some type of exercise. Make it a habit to do something physical each day to keep your body and mind in shape. Do not neglect this……it can make you or break you. It can give you more power for the other habits you need to foster. I liked Laura Schlessingers diet suggestion, ‘MOVE MORE, EAT LESS”.
Be balanced. Spend the right amount of time at work and spend the right amount of time with your loved ones.
Stop doing the bad or negative things. Yes, making a conscious effort to stop doing the things you should not. hummm, you need to figure that out. Replace the bad things or non-productive things with good things.
This instills a new habit.
Don’t forget to meditate. Is this hard?….no. This is a simple….spend 5 minutes alone contemplating you and your life. Just be still and think about the day and your family, friends, job and responsibilities or to calm the mind…. don’t think of anything. Some people call this prayer, some call it meditation, some call it quiet time, or peaceful time…..none the less take the time for yourself to reflect on things.
These are just a few suggestions that have helped me. Think on the habits you need to foster to be the best you can be. You can be greater than you are today. Just develop new habits and perfect old good habits.
Go make BIG things happen,
Love you all,
sysr
