I ran across this ancient proverb…”Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall. Better it is to be of an humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud”
How do you understand this and how can you apply this in your business and influential setting?
It makes me wonder as I read about the two Attorney Generals in Utah and the charges they are facing along with Mr. Johnson in St. George and his criminal charges. Do you think their pride got in the way?
Do you think they would recount the situations and the positions they took?
You/We carry a heavy responsibility to each other, to our customers, our communities, our families and the manufactures and vendors we represent and do business with. Make sure we don’t fall victim to Pride. We can and should treat everyone with dignity and professionalism without the negative Pride that sometimes wiggles its way into relationships or situations.
You/We can make BIG things happen without falling to the trappings of Pride.
Go do BIG things,
sysr
(by the way do you know where that ancient proverb is?)
Loved this. Thanks for sharing. Humility is something everyone can work on. We had a fascinating discussion in one of my MBA classes about this and how it is important to be humble with all of your co-workers and vendors (something I can work on). We need to see everyone as business partners… we are all working together to make each others companies and lives successful. Good relationships and humility are keys to success. You are a great example of that too.
Loved this. Thank you for the reminder.
Old Testament: I can still remember an experience that changed the way I treated those I work with, a new salesman from the Chevy store came across the street to borrow a car. For whatever reason I was in a bad mood and I felt superior to this new salesman so when I told him he couldn’t take our car I did so in a disrespectful way and acted as if he was interrupting my important tasks. I went about my day as if it didn’t even happen until I got a call from Trent telling me this salesman had heard that I was a great guy and I was always willing to help and that what I did made him feel small. I felt horrible and quickly recalled the times I had been disrespected and mis treated, I wanted to make it right. I immediately went over mad pulled him aside and apologized. It wasn’t my best moment but I quickly realized having an attitude of humility and gratitude is far greater than an attitude of pride. It has really changed the way I speak with those I have the pleasure of working with.
Respect for others is so important in our business. Thanks for the reminder
Jake I love that story. Thanks for sharing.
You can’t fake humility.
PRIDE is the root of all that is evil. Like jake’s experence, pride would have kept him from a quick resolution. Pride infest so many marriages these days. This in turn, can break down even the strongest of couples. I have experenced this first hand. Great topic to bring to the forefront of our thoughts….
