Here are some thought starter “ifferisms” for pondering over the weekend;
“If you are not failing every now and again, it’s a sign you’re playing it safe” -Woody Allen
“If the highest aim of a captain were to preserve his ship,
he would keep it in port forever.” -Saint Thomas Aquinas
“If you are distressed by anything external,
the pain is not due to the thing itself but to your own estimate of it;
and this you have the power to revoke at any moment.” -Marcus Aurelius
“If you want to learn something, read about it.
If you want to understand something, write about it.
If you want to master something, teach it.” -Yogi Bhajan
“If I have learned anything in my life,
it is that bitterness consumes the vessel that contains it.” -Rubin “Hurricane” Carter
Pick one and comment on it. There will be a prize for the person that comments on the number I have chosen.
Have a great weekend and make BIG things happen,

“If you are not failing every now and again, it’s a sign you’re playing it safe” -Woody Allen
It’s extremely difficult to learn much from our successes. We generally learn much more from our failures. While failing doesn’t necessarily get us the results we are looking for, it is the path we follow to get where we want to go.
“If you are not failing every now and again, it’s a sign you’re playing it safe” -Woody Allen
I love this! To me, If i’m not taking risks I’m not growing. I think it’s important to take risks even if we fail because it will help us learn and become better as a person!
Bitterness is ugly and can be all-consuming. Oscar Wilde wrote, “revenge is a dish best served cold”. Life is meant to be lived – we have control over everything that we do, who we are, and what we become. We are the master of our own destinies. The only limits we have are those we set upon ourselves. “ALL IN” comes to mind – we, the YAG, are a team and that requires all of us to come each day to focus in on our responsibilities with the mind set of possibilities. Are we all, ALL IN? That mind set is a game changer, and what makes GREAT teams. We all contribute in some way to the success of this great group.
“If the highest aim of a captain were to preserve his ship,
he would keep it in port forever.” -Saint Thomas Aquinas
I think this means that you have to go out and do things and take risks if you want to grow. You can’t move forward in life if you stay in the same safe place. Take a risk every now and again. It pays off!
“If you are distressed by anything external,
the pain is not due to the thing itself but to your own estimate of it;
and this you have the power to revoke at any moment.” -Marcus Aurelius
We are 100% responsible to how we respond and react to things that happen to us. If you take on new things in a negative way, it is your responsibility, not the “things”
“If I have learned anything in my life, it is that bitterness consumes the vessel that contains it.” -Rubin “Hurricane” Carter
So true, we have all had things that we are bitter about, but getting past them, not holding onto the anger will make you a better, happier, more peaceful person.
“If you want to learn something, read about it.
If you want to understand something, write about it.
If you want to master something, teach it.” -Yogi Bhajan
I like this because it encompasses every aspect in life, wether work, home, school, religion. The more you want to know, the more you want to grow and learn, the more work you need to put into something. I have learned so much more by taking the initiative in looking things up myself rather than just asking someone, I have grown by trying something myself and then teaching someone else, I have learned more about myself and about the subject or project or task that I am teaching.
I like Yogi Bhajan’s quote. I have always learned more by teaching than the people I teach.
“If you want to learn something, read about it.
If you want to understand something, write about it.
If you want to master something, teach it.” -Yogi Bhajan
I absolutely live this daily. I believe knowledge is extremely important. We fortunately have more than just paper books now to find whatever content interests us.
I personally have to write down my thoughts to understand what is goin on in my head. Ideas are just that, you still need a plan or goal and you can’t make one without drawing out a map of some kind.
As a trainer, especially being a mother, the last sentance speaks too true. You think you have learned something until you have to explain it. Training or teaching is a whole new game, mostly because everyone learns and absorbs very different. A good teacher must discover every possible way to teach the material. Once you have, I believe you have explained and performed it several times to the point that you have mastered any and everything about it.
If you are not failing every now and again, it’s a sign you’re playing it safe” -Woody Allen
We can’t control failure. But with failure we learn to be better. (ry)
“If you are distressed by anything external,
the pain is not due to the thing itself but to your own estimate of it;
and this you have the power to revoke at any moment.” -Marcus Aurelius
YOU are in charge of your own being and your life. Things can happen around you or to you but you hold the power of choice. The choice of how you are going to let it affect you.
“If you are not failing every now and again, it’s a sign you’re playing it safe” -Woody Allen
One of my biggest downfalls in the past was being worried about being a “failure” and worrying about what everyone would think of my failure……….
This cost me years of unhappiness, and losing my feelings of confidence.
I have learned that failure is sometimes the best thing that can happen, and has made me a much stronger person. It has caused me to find the Lesli i once was!
“If you are distressed by anything external, the pain is not due to the thing itself but to your own estimate of it; and this you have the power to revoke at any moment.” -Marcus Aurelius
Our perception becomes our reality – we choose how experiences affect us.
Wonderful quotes. Hard to choose which one has more meaning than another, I think that all of them pertain in one way or another to everyone. I think that I would have to comment on “If you are not failing now and again, it’s a sign that you are playing it safe.” My thoughts on this run deep and personal. I love taking chances and I don’t believe in failing. My thoughts are that there is no failing, there is only learning and growing form the choices you make in life. Failure is a choice you make, as long as you take something from every situation and put your heart into everything you do then you have not failed, even if the outcome is not what you had hoped for. You may consider not reaching your goal a failure but you just have to keep pushing forward and take what you learned from that to set a new goal; not a plan B but a better plan A. If you don’t give yourself the option of a plan B then you will have to succeed at plan A.
One of my favorite quotes that I try to keep at the front of my mind is “ Success consists of going from failure to failure without the loss of enthusiasm.” – Winston Churchill
In my eyes that is not a failure, but a win on every level.
Mr. Young,
I love this quote. “If you want to learn something, read about it. If you want to understand something, write about it.
If you want to master something, teach it.” My dad quoted this to me many times. I have used it many times in my life. The first part is self explanatory. The second part sometimes didn’t become clear until later down the road when I would go back and read the things that I had written down. The third is something that JD Bradley and I have watched first hand this month. In taking on this new position as Finance Manager, JD has taken the time to train and teach me the information he has learned back here in Finance. JD made the comment to me that he was amazed that as he was trying to teach me perfect practices, it made him focus more on what he needed to be doing right. And in teaching perfect practices, it has made him use those same practices in his closings. He is currently tracking at the highest per copy he has done in the 7 months back in finance.
Great words to live by!
If you want to understand something, write about it.
If you want to master something, teach it.” -Yogi Bhajan
I think we have all experienced this at one time or another, my thought is we need to provide opportunities for our team members to experience teaching the principles we want them to master.
We have not hit the designed comment number yet, the prize awaits. Get everyone reading the posts and commenting. We all rise as we all share our thoughts. Make BIG things happen.

“If you want to learn something, read about it.
If you want to understand something, write about it.
If you want to master something, teach it.” -Yogi Bhajan
Any time I set out to teach someone something I find that I always learn more about the subject myself.
“If I have learned anything in my life,
it is that bitterness consumes the vessel that contains it.” -Rubin “Hurricane” Carter
This is a good reminder to me. I have seen many people who get offended by someone and held onto it and never let it go. They are doing a great injustice to themselves and it wears on them. They spend all their energy focusing on what offended them and the person that offended them that they cannot focus on growing and improving themselves.
In sales it can be easy to be offended by our customers and to build a grudge or prejudice against certain types of customers. We cannot allow this to happen to ourselves or those around us. We also cannot let this happen amongst or colleagues. We must learn to forgive and forgot and move on. Otherwise we will not improve oursves. We will destroy our “vessels” from the inside if we don’t.
“If the highest aim of a captain were to preserve his ship,
he would keep it in port forever.” -Saint Thomas Aquinas
This makes me ponder where YAG was 20 years ago versus now. YAG was a much smaller, tidy, profitable organization. But instead of ‘preserving the ship’, we set sail on a sea of risk which has resulted in so much opportunity for many good people! The cool think is that we are still growing, still sailing, and still creating opportunities for the YAG team. Who knows where we all will be five years from now? All because our captain was willing to risk his ship!
‘If you are stressed by anything external…’ We all face challenges in our lives, some days are better than others. This reminds me of a story of a man who was shot, drs looked at him ‘knowing’ he would die. He was asked if he was allergic to anything and he answered ‘bullets’. He then asked them to treat him as if he were going to live. He survived because of how he CHOSE to react. We always have a choice in how we react. In every situation. I know I need to be better!
“If I have learned anything in my life,
it is that bitterness consumes the vessel that contains it.” -Rubin “Hurricane” Carter
Bitterness, like most aspects in life, has the largest effect on the individual who carries it.
However, if this principle holds, being consumed with the positive in life will also consume ones vessel adding to those who employee it. The choice is avaliable for us all, negative or positive. The secret is being able to recognize and take action on this principle when we have the desire to dewell on the negative.
“If the highest aim of a captain were to preserve his ship,
he would keep it in port forever.” -Saint Thomas Aquinas
We cannot lead if we do not risk. If we are afraid to fail. One of the biggest problems of organized education is that we are taught failing is bad. It is our failures that teach us and help us grow. It is our failures that build us up and allow us to succeed.
As Henry Ford says “Failure is only the opportunity to begin again, only this time more wisely”
I love the comment by Yogi. To master something we need to teach. This is so true and really emphasizes the importance to train and help people develop. In that same process of helping others we stregthen ourselves.
“If you are distressed by anything external,
the pain is not due to the thing itself but to your own estimate of it;
and this you have the power to revoke at any moment.” -Marcus Aurelius
Love this quote, sometimes we delay things because we just think about it too much or over-analyze the difficulty. We need to quit thinking about getting things done and do it.
If you are not failing every now and again, it’s a sign you are playing it safe.
Back to a favorite saying i heard “somewhere”… Make Big things happen. You cannot make Big things happen playing it safe. Failure is a part of reaping rewards.
“If you are not failing every now and again, it’s a sign you’re playing it safe” -Woody Allen
I belive in failure we find our greatest opportunity for self improvement .
“If you are not failing every now and again, it’s a sign you’re playing it safe” -Woody Allen
This quote is very true. To grow personally, you must push past what scares you.
“If you are not failing every now and again, it’s a sign you’re playing it safe” -Woody Allen
I believe this quote is perfect for what we do every day. The average person always plays it safe and never takes any chances where the professional is not afraid of failure and takes it as an opportunity to grow and learn.
Bitterness consumes the vessel. We see this all over the news in every broadcast. Forgiveness is often times difficult but perhaps there is no greater relief in life. We need more forgiving in this world, from both sides of every argument.
The comment incentive number has not been reached. I will wait two more days and if we don’t reach the specified number then I will close the incentive. It is really close so share your comments.

I love this one. It reminds me of something I read years ago and have tried ever since to make a part of my life. It was from a small book “Don’t sweat the small stuff”.
When I read the statement “Choose not to be offended” it changed my life. I realized I don’t have the energy to be offended. It is my choice it is up to me. I truly believe most of the time we are offended when no offense is intended. Realizing this has made my life so much easier and I’m all for that.
